working with the Nhs
Together we are working to help stamp out Weight Stigma.
This is essential for promoting social justice and creating a more equitable society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
How exactly is BIF involved with the NHS?
In April 2023, an NHS manager involved in a healthy lifestyle project reached out to Kim Stacey, our founder. They expressed dissatisfaction with the NHS’s conventional approach to healthy eating and movement, which heavily emphasizes medicalization, weight loss, and overlooks the harmful aspects of diet culture. Seeking a new direction, they commissioned Kim to educate Primary Care Workers within a Primary Care Network in Nottingham.
So far Kim has;
Provided a toolkit
The toolkit covered the detrimental effects of Diet Culture, highlighted the advantages of a weight-neutral approach, and shed light on the genuine obstacles individuals in larger bodies encounter when seeking healthcare.
Provided Awareness Sessions
These awareness sessions delved deeper into topics covered in the toolkit, featuring interviews with individuals who have experienced weight stigma. They shared insights into its impact and the positive changes that occurred upon stepping away from diet culture.
Provided passes for patients to use our membership
In Nottingham, a Primary Care Network is piloting a new approach by offering our membership to patients, shifting away from the traditional weight-centric method of referring individuals to slimming clubs.
